2006 Executive
History SAFDA, the South African Flying Disc Association was first established in ???? by Justin Smith. It was Smith who first contacted WFDF with regard to seeking affiliation, and it was Smith who steered the fledgling game and governing body through the first difficult years as it sought to gain a foothold in the competitive world of South African sport. When Justin left South Africa to travel abroad, the running of SAFDA was turned over to an elected steering committee, which is the organization that we know today. Ultimate, and indeed Disc sports in general, remain Cinderella options in the big money world international sport. In a developing country like South Africa this Cinderella status is even more apparent. Nevertheless SAFDA has made it its mission to grow the game throughout the country. Development Truworths was our primary sponsor in establishing Ultimate Frisbee in Khayelitsha in 1996. They were approached by a Canadian player, through an N.G.O. known as Ikamva Labantu, who was looking for ways to introduce the sport to youth in community areas of Cape Town. A mini-league in 8 community primary schools in Khayeltisha was set-up. The pinnacle success of this program was sending a team of Juniors to represent South Africa at the World Championships in Finland in 2004. Ten years on, 2006 finds a core group from Khayelitsha continuing to play as an integrated part of Cape Town Ultimate. Pindle May, one of the primary school teachers involved since inception, manages the group, transporting them weekly into Cape Town for games. The vehicle and fuel is generously sponsored by Mike Cooper, owner/manager of a number of Cash Crusader shops in the greater Cape Town area. |
